50) What was the first thing you thought of when you woke up?
“Can I put off grocery shopping for one more day?” The answer was no.

On Friday when we were at the pier waiting for Sailor Boy, we see people coming off the ship wearing masks.  The captain’s wife is standing with us and informs us that there were some cases of swine flu on the ship.   Great.  Sailor Boy was sick and Her Majesty and I ended up getting sick on Monday.

I don’t think it’s swine flu though.  I’ve had the flu before and it kicked my ass.  Even so, whatever I have still sucks.  It doesn’t feel like a cold but it doesn’t really feel like the flu.  I’ve had a sore throat, cough, headache, body aches and fatigue.  No runny nose, sneezing or congestion, which I always get with a cold.

I had to drag my ass out of bed to go grocery shopping today though.  I’ve been back almost a week and it needed to be done.   We were out of pretty much everything.  I definitely miss the days when it was just me, Sailor Boy and Her Majesty.  I still would have had to go shopping when I got back, but I wouldn’t have had to buy so much.  Since my stock of meat was gone and we were completely out of all condiments, I ended up spending $232.40.  That leaves me only $17.60 for the next 2 weeks.  That sucks.

I do have some happy news.   One of the things I hate about it here is that it’s warm, so we have to leave our window open to get air going through.  That means I get to hear sirens, helicopters, and people while I’m trying to sleep.  Not to mention that there is a street light right outside our window.  So I finally broke down and bought and AC and some blackout curtains.  Now my bedroom is like a cold, dark, quiet cave and it’s so much more peaceful.

We’re back. Bleh.

Her Majesty and I are back in San Diego.  I already miss my parents, my pups and air conditioning.  :(

I’ll be able to get back on track with my frugal stuff though.

I was taking pics of the pups and noticed that in just about every shot of Frankie, she manages to look so serious and regal (and pretty).

Hershey on the other hand, is really stinkin’ cute, but manages to look like the doofiest dog ever in at least half the shots.

Bags, bags, bags!

Since I only brought crochet hooks with me, I’ve only been working on market bags. I wanted to make a bunch anyway.  Out of all the market bags I’ve made so far, I think I like the pattern for the last two the best.  It’s called Rust Goes Green.

I just got an e-mail from Sailor Boy saying he was nominated for Sailor of the Quarter!  Keeping my fingers crossed that he gets it.  I’m so proud of him.  He’s gone from absolutely hating the navy, to really taking his job seriously and being damn good at it.

Alive and kickin’!

Despite my recent lack of posts, I’m still alive.  I’ve been at my parents house in New Mexico since the 15th.  Will be here until July 10th.  I’ve just been hanging out with the parents and the pooches.

I’ve done some more crochet.  I didn’t bring knitting needles as I figured dull crochet hooks would be easier to get on the plane than sharp, metal needles.  Have really only been working on bags.  I’ve done 3 more of the string bags and am now working on a different crocheted bag.  Will post pics when I get around to it.

I started on J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood novels.  They’re ok vampire stories.  There are a couple things that irk me though.  The kre8tiv name spellings are a little tiresome.  Also, my ideal vampires don’t listen to rap.  That just doesn’t sit right with me.

I also decided to paint my bedroom.  My mom had painted it peach for me and stenciled stars on the wall over my bed (peach is one of my fave colors and I collected star stuff).  That was about 7 years ago.  I decided it was time for a change, so I painted it Napa Valley green with a Tea Leaf green accent wall.  Sailor Boy said it was ugly but I happen to disagree very much.  I love the new colors.  I even put on new outlet covers and painted the hook rack to match.

More shopping

I made two more shopping trips today.  Neither of them were fantastic, but everything I bought was on sale, and at Target, I had coupons for everything.

The best deal was the cereal, which after the sale price and coupons, ended up being .99¢.  The MarroBones are to take home to my Frankie.  This trip cost $17.34.

The Ralph’s trip was to pick up some stuff that Sailor Boy and Mr. Furious specifically asked for.  Fortunately, again, everything was on sale.   This trip was $29.13.

Total damage was $46.67.   Which, if you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know puts me $35.47 over budget.  I was planning on taking it out of the grocery budget from next payday, but instead, I decided to use money from the household fund (since I actually still had money in it).  Now Mr. Furious and Sailor Boy have PLENTY of food for the next 3 1/2 weeks and I still get to use all of the next 2 payday’s grocery budgets for the trip home.  Yayyyy!

Menu Monday

Monday

  • chicken quesadillas
  • spanish rice
  • grapes

Tuesday

  • T-bones
  • grilled onions/peppers/mushrooms
  • rice

Wednesday

  • drumsticks
  • noodles
  • corn

Thursday

  • shrimp pasta
  • salad

Friday

  • roasted chicken
  • mashed potatoes
  • green beans

Saturday

  • beef enchiladas
  • lettuce/tomato
  • fruit

Sunday

  • bacon & cheese farfalle
  • salad
  • garlic bread

Yes, 3 of these items were on last week’s menu, but last week got completely messed around.  We ended up having chicken on Monday.  Sailor Boy didn’t get home until really late on Friday and would have had a fit if we had T-bones without him, so we had spaghetti that day.  Saturday we got invited to a bbq and had bratwurst.

Shopping

I’ve decided to use the rest of the grocery budget ($61) to try to stock up on sale items for Mr. Furious.  I was trying to find enough good sales to where I can still use all of next paydays grocery budget for the trip home.

I went to Ralph’s and spent $21.  I forgot to take a pic but I got…
12 packages of Lipton rice and noodles
4 individual Jeno’s pizzas
4 boxes of Hot Pockets
1 DiGiorno flat bread pizza (which was dinner on Wednesday)

Today I went to Von’s because bnls/sknls breasts were $1.99/lb and I spent $29.

That leaves me with $11 for the next week, which will go to milk and bread.
